Is it legal to use vegetable oil as a fuel?

It is legal in the Uk to use up to 2500litres per year as a road fuel without declaring.
The laws are different in other countries so check first.

What savings can be made using vegetable oil?
Basically the more fuel you use the more you will save.Recycled oil can be free.If you buy vegetable oil from the supermarket it will cost you 73p/litre compared with £1.15 for Diesel a saving of more than 35% on todays (26.03.08) fuel cost.

How do the kits work?

The kits work on the same principle as the big ships that burn crude oil. When vegetable oil is heated it becomes less viscous. The car conversions work on the same principle by adding heat via heat exchangers, which are heated from the coolant system. When the oil is heated suficiantly it can burn completly. If the oil is heated insuficiantly it is unable to atomise properly (spray finely enough) when injected, resulting in a carbon build up in the engine.

The idea of the two tank system is that you start up on diesel and when the engine reaches running temperature the oil becomes less viscous (thinner) at this point the system semi-automaticaly/automaticaly switches over to run on vegetable oil.

Does vegetable oil use effect the performance of the engine?
You will not notice any difference in mpg acceleration or top speed.

What engines can use vegetable oil as a fuel?
Nearly all diesel engines can be converted to run on vegetable oil but some injection pumps are better than others, (more below).

What engines are suitable for your kits?
Our kits are suitable for Vehicles that return more than 20 mpg, eg. small cars and light vans (under 3litre),which have either 8 or 10mm diameter fuel lines(please ask about kits for larger engines). Engines that are either Pre chamber or direct injection (Tdi) with distributor type/inline injection pumps. Ideally suited to Bosch, Diesel kiki, Nippon Denso or Zexel injection pumps.

Lucas Cav, Stanadyne, Delphi, RotoDiesel and Bosch VP44 pumps can possibly be used but vegetable oil must never, never be allowed to cool down in the pumps.

Can you mix Vegetable oil with Diesel?
The fuels can be mixed but don’t forget that cold vegetable oil can effect
the fuel pump and possibly cold starting.

Does using Vegetable effect maintenance?
Just like burning diesel it is advisable to stick to the manufacturers
maintainance schedule.

Can you use vegetable oil in the winter?
It is advisable to add a small amount of diesel in our system when the
temperature nears 0 degrees C.

What are the advantages of using vegetable oil?

Waste oil can be reused as a fuel instead of being a problem.
Organically grown winter rapeseed is a Local and sustainable product.
Burning pure plant oil is CO2 neutral and gives off less NO2 if locally grown
in the correct way.
Vegetable oil is sulphur dioxide free when burnt, so doesn’t cause acid rain.
Vegetable oil is Non Toxic, and biodegradable.
Using Vegetable oil spares crude oil for future uses.
There are no waste products in the making of vegetable oil.
It doesn’t take much energy to produce vegetable oil.
The use of vegetable is a much safer stored fuel, it will not catch fire until it
reaches around 300 degrees C.
The smell of vegetable oil is pleasant
Vegetable oil is Non Toxic, and safe to handle.
Vegetable oil is also cheaper on the pocket.

What are the benefits of SVO/PPO over biodiesel?

Biodiesel is vegetable oil that has undergone chemical and heat treatments. These extra processes require upto 25 times as much energy input as using straight vegetale (svo).

This process is on going where as its not necessary if you convert the car once.

Biodiesel is toxic.

Biodiesel is not as sustainable as vegetable oil for the above reasons.

Biodiesel effects the rubber seals in some engines.

Biodiesel is more expensive to produce and buy.

Are conversions permanent?

No,just take the kit off and put things back how they were. Then just fit the kit to your next vehicle.
